Flood Coolant
Standard low-pressure flooding of the cut zone. Cheap and effective for general machining and lubrication.
High-Pressure Coolant (HPC)
1000+ psi through-tool jets break chips, reach deep holes, and cut heat in tough alloys — transformational for titanium/Inconel and deep drilling.
Through-Spindle / Through-Tool
Coolant piped through the spindle and tool to the edge — essential for deep-hole drilling and chip evacuation.
Filtration & Chip Management
Bag/cartridge, drum, and centrifuge filtration plus chip conveyors keep fluid clean and reclaim it.

How engineers decide

Rules of thumb behind the common trade-offs.

Do I need high-pressure coolant?
Yes for titanium, Inconel, and other tough alloys, and for deep drilling — HPC snaps chips and pulls heat from the edge, multiplying tool life and enabling higher feeds. Flood is fine for aluminum and general steel at moderate depth.
How fine should filtration be?
Match it to the delivery system: HPC and through-spindle need fine filtration (single-digit to ~20 µm) to protect pumps and finish; flood tolerates coarser. Under-filtering an HPC pump is a fast way to kill it.
Central system or standalone tanks?
Central filtration/coolant for many machines running the same fluid — consistent quality, less labor. Standalone tanks for mixed fluids, isolation, or a small shop.
Why is sump life short and smelly?
Concentration drifting low, tramp oil, and poor filtration breed bacteria. Monitor concentration, skim tramp oil, filter fines, and keep the fluid moving/aerated.

Cause: Inadequate filtration letting fines into the pump
Design around it: Spec fine filtration ahead of the HPC pump, maintain filters, monitor pressure.
⚠ Bacterial growth / rancid sump
Cause: Low concentration, tramp oil, stagnation
Design around it: Monitor and hold concentration, skim tramp oil, filter and circulate, add biocide per supplier.
⚠ Thermal drift on precision parts
Cause: Coolant temperature swinging over the run
Design around it: Add a chiller/temperature control, insulate, warm-up cycle, in-process gauging.
⚠ Chips not clearing → recutting/tool damage
Cause: Weak flushing or poor conveyor
Design around it: Add through-tool/HPC flushing, correct conveyor, program chip-clearing moves.
