Toolholding

Collet Chuck (ER etc.)
General-purpose, flexible clamping range with good runout for the price. The shop default for drilling and light-to-medium milling.
Shrink-Fit
Heat expands the bore to grip the shank — lowest runout, slim profile, excellent balance for high-rpm and hard milling.
Hydraulic / Milling Chuck
Hydraulic clamps for low runout with vibration damping; heavy milling chucks for maximum pull-out resistance in roughing.
Weldon / Side-Lock & Face Mill Holders
Set-screw side-lock for positive anti-pull-out on roughing; dedicated arbors for shell/face mills.
Tapping & Modular / Boring Systems
Tension-compression tap holders, and modular boring heads for precise bore diameters.

Spindle interface (CAT/BT/HSK/Capto/BBT)
Must match the machine spindle; dual-contact (HSK/Capto/BBT) adds rigidity at high rpm.

Directly sets tool life, finish, and diameter accuracy — low TIR is the whole point.

How engineers decide

Rules of thumb behind the common trade-offs.

Which spindle taper?
CAT/BT for general work and existing tooling. HSK, Capto, or BIG-Plus (BBT) for high-rpm, high-precision, or heavy interrupted cuts — the dual face+taper contact resists pull-out and adds rigidity.
Shrink-fit, hydraulic, or collet?
Shrink-fit for the lowest runout and best high-rpm/hard-milling balance. Hydraulic for low runout plus vibration damping and quick tool change. ER collet for everyday flexibility and cost.
Roughing holder choice?
Weldon side-lock or a heavy-duty milling chuck for positive anti-pull-out at high torque. Avoid plain collets for aggressive roughing — the tool can walk out.
How low does runout need to be?
Tighter for small tools, finishing, and long life — under ~5 µm TIR for precision; every extra micron of runout unevenly loads flutes and cuts tool life. Match holder class to the tightest tool you run.

What goes wrong — War Stories

⚠ Excess runout → short tool life / poor finish
Cause: Worn holder, dirty taper, low-quality collet, damaged spindle
Design around it: Measure TIR, clean tapers, retire worn collets/holders, use shrink/hydraulic for precision.
⚠ Tool pull-out during roughing
Cause: Insufficient grip for the cutting torque
Design around it: Use Weldon side-lock or milling chuck, correct clamping torque, don't over-hang.
⚠ Vibration / chatter at high rpm
Cause: Unbalanced holder assembly
Design around it: Use balanced holders (G2.5 at operating rpm), balance the full assembly, keep it slim and short.
⚠ Fretting / taper damage
Cause: Micro-movement and debris at the spindle interface
Design around it: Clean and inspect tapers, correct drawbar force, replace fretted holders.
