How engineers decide

Rules of thumb behind the common trade-offs.

Add a 4th/5th axis or buy a 5-axis machine?
A rotary table/indexer is a cost-effective way to add multi-side capability to an existing mill for occasional or 3+2 work. Buy a true 5-axis machine when simultaneous machining, rigidity, and volume justify it — bolt-on rotaries have limits on load and dynamics.
Is probing worth it?
Almost always in production: probing removes manual setup time and human error, updates offsets automatically, and catches problems in-process. Payback is fast on anything with frequent setups or tight tolerance.
How do I keep accessory accuracy?
Calibrate probes and rotary axes on a schedule, confirm control macros and offsets, and verify with a known artifact. An uncalibrated probe or drifting rotary quietly makes scrap.
When a bar feeder?
When turning repeat parts in volume — a bar feeder plus part catcher enables unattended running. Match spindle bore and bar length; short bar feeders and magazines suit different work.
