How engineers decide

Dedicated or flexible equipment?
Dedicated special-purpose machinery for very high, stable volume — lowest unit cost. Flexible/servo and modular equipment when the product mix or volume varies, trading some peak rate for changeover agility.
How do I maximize uptime?
Design for reliability and quick maintenance, monitor OEE and failure modes, keep critical spares, and use predictive maintenance. On a volume line, an hour of downtime is an hour of lost product across every station.
Where does automation pay off?
On high-volume, repetitive, or ergonomically hard tasks with stable demand. Automate the bottleneck and the quality-critical steps first. Volatile, low-volume work often stays better semi-automated or manual.
How important is in-line inspection?
Very — catching a defect at the station that made it is far cheaper than at final or in the field. Build inspection and reject handling into the line, not as an afterthought, especially for regulated or safety product.
